A monumental volume inserts itself into the anthroposophical farming landscape. The cross-section shows a project where varying levels meet the animals’ needs. The generous openings and openplan layout give the livestock a degree of self-determination. Modern farming practices combine sympathetically with the space and with animal welfare considerations.
Natural light from overhead works with the large doors on the gable ends to give the cathedral-like volume an airy feel and highlight its structural elements. The use of robust materials breaks up the space and adds a level of detail that remains in keeping with the barn’s purpose.
This is an insightful, functionalist project that shows respect for animals, humanity and nature – a carefully considered project that should set the benchmark for agricultural buildings of the future.

A word from the architect When working on a project where the main purpose is to safeguard function, cohesion, users and details and where the farm is an integral part of society, we wanted to use wood to highlight an important tradition in a new setting. The choice of timber as a material for both the structure and façade was an obvious one for both the architect and builders in their aim to reinforce and manifest Nibble Farm’s vision for the future of sustainable farming. All exposed wooden sections have been treated with heated linseed oil. Façades painted with ferrous sulphate with silver stain, copper vitriol and titanium white as additive.
