THE GATEWAY DC pavilion at Saint Elizabeths East opened in November 2013 and is already being described as an iconic building. Washington DC now has a new focal point at the heart of a new link between the East and West campuses of Saint Elizabeths University Hospital. At a little over 7 metres tall, the wooden pavilion is described by architects Davis Brody Bond as a universal structure – created in response to the existing, and expected, movements across the space.
The building provides space for restaurants, markets, casual meetings and events in culture and the arts. The green roof measures 1,515 square metres and is open to the public as somewhere to enjoy a lunchtime coffee in the sun or just take in the view. The structure also conceals a 10,000 litre rainwater tank that meets the whole property’s irrigation needs.«
