IN THE WOOD industry, the small community of Fristad outside Borås is best known for its factory producing workwear. When public housing company Fribo came to develop new residences here, it turned to the Tengbom architectural practice. The result was a two-part apartment block that in June won the Borås town planning award in the housing category. The prize is presented every three years.
The motto ‘wood through and through’ informed the whole process. The finished six-storey buildings have walls, roofs and a structural frame in solid wood, while the façade is clad in shingles of Western red cedar. The wood is also repeated on the inside, with the 44 apartments clad in white-glazed wood panels.«
