2013 SAW THE recreation centre at Fontinberget burn down. The area is popular with walkers and residents in and around Kungälv, and the little building provided a place for them to rest and enjoy a coffee. The task of creating a new centre for the outdoorsy Kungälv residents fell to Tengbom’s Gothenburg office, with Christer Ödmark as the lead architect.
The new building was given the name “Kotten” (Pine cone) – appropriately enough considering the oval shape and the overlapping diagonal wooden panels. These are made from Organowood – pine timber impregnated with various minerals, including silicon, in a process that resembles fossilisation. The sedum roof does a great job of making the 600 square metre “Kotten” merge in among the pines along the shore of Svarte Mosse lake. The interior features untreated birch plywood panels with a rotary-cut surface.«
