With his pavilion for the Tokyo-based housing fair House Vision 2016, Sou Fujimoto turned the idea of the classic rental housing block inside out. The theme for the fair in August was “Co-individual”. The succinctly named pavilion “Rental space tower” showcases an alternative way for many people to live in a small space. The usual approach is to go for well proportioned private living spaces and a few small communal areas. Here the reverse is true. Those who live in Fujimoto’s concept building can forget about the idea of their own living room, for example. There are also zones of planting and the food preparation area is shared by the residents. Between the minimal apartments, generous spaces for relaxation, socialising and spontaneous meetings spread out both horizontally and vertically. The sugarloaf shaped structure is constructed from traditional plywood on a spruce frame.
