People are increasingly realising that wood is good for people’s well-being, and when planning new developments, exposed wood is becoming the order of the day. A prime example is the winning entry in an architectural competition in Sundbyberg outside Stockholm, where a new development focusing on sustainable living is being created in the district of Ör. The design, created by Folkhem and Arkitema Architects, has the express vision of turning the spotlight fully on wood.
“We wanted to make the wood as visible as possible, bearing in mind the positive effect the material has on people’s well-being,” explains Kristina Peters, partner at Arkitema Architects.
The development will have a glulam post-and-beam structure with elements of CLT, which will be fully exposed in the façades. A total of 196 apartments will be spread across six buildings of differing heights – ranging from four to 15 storeys. The stepped design is used as a way of flooding the apartments with natural light. The roof will have terraces and greenhouses to give the development a green feel.
