Open spaces with a warm feel

La résidence des stagiaires in Quebec, Canada by Atelier Pierre Thibault

Every summer, architects, landscape architects and designers descend on the Reford Gardens in a rural area of Quebec for the International Garden Festival. Festival participants sometimes spend many months on the site and need somewhere to stay during that time. Atelier Pierre Thibault has now created a simple and authentic building that offers visitors the comfort they require. The rooms are light and airy, with large windows for maximum daylight, and the upper floor is open to the roof ridge, giving its large dormitories and bedrooms a spacious and open feel.

The two wings are brought together by the outside terrace. The façades are finished in ash and internally the walls and ceilings are also clad in wood. The cladding has clear knot marks, creating a warm and genuine environment. It is all hand-made by a local carpenter, and the furniture is chosen to harmonise with this craftsmanship. Once the festival ends and autumn begins, the building will house students.
