Kvinnohuset in Örebro supports women and children who have experienced some form of domestic violence and need help or secure accommodation.
Last year, the organisation gained new premises. Part of the town’s old fire station was converted into offices and communal spaces, and next-door a modern apartment block was erected in wood. The architects wanted to create a safe environment for the residents, while at the same time not hiding the building behind high walls and fences. The light and soft wood also creates a welcoming feel.
The five-storey apartment block is built around a glulam frame that is stabilised by a concrete stairwell. The façade comprises wood cladding that is placed horizontally, creating a fine contrast with the surrounding stuccoed buildings. On a site that was already surrounded by apartment blocks, there were further benefits to building in wood: the structural components were delivered on the day that they were lifted into place, for example, which made the construction process quieter and more efficient.
